In the context of 21st-century technology mania, there exists a general perception among students and parents that English subjects such as Literature hold little worth in the way of university prerequisites, future employment and individual amusement. Literature is often neglected for the sciences and mathematics in VCE years, yet it is underestimated in its complexity and academic requirement, leading to the tertiary study of arts, journalism and education, as well as an understanding of and appreciation for the written word and individual expression, doubtlessly equipping students with invaluable skills seldom taught elsewhere.
Students of literature are exposed to a diverse variety of texts and authors, encompassing novels, plays, short stories and poetry, ranging from the likes of influential American Tennessee Williams, legendary William Shakespeare and Indigenous Australian Samuel Wagan Watson. At the conclusion of their secondary education, students completing their VCE will encounter a two hour exam consisting of two course-related essays. Students have a choice of the texts they wish to analyse, thus, being able to showcase the expanse of their skills and depth of their knowledge in a classic text analysis coupled with a passage analysis.
While identifying the views and values of an author is simple in itself, the difficulty lies in translating this understanding into a personal interpretation within the parameters of a coherent and sophisticated essay.
Students often succumb to the narration of the events of a text instead of analysing and interpreting views, values and motifs presented by the author. It is detrimental to student success to actively question author intent and interpret the meaning of their findings in order to flourish in Literature.
For students to prosper in their study of this deceptively simple subject, they should engage in class discussion and explore resources outside of the classroom, such as expert analysis of selected texts. Of course, students should always be seeking to extend themselves and improve on the coherence and sophistication of their written expression.
