There are two issues that should be addressed in this situation. One being the fact that the student finds the analytical essays to be boring and the other that they are struggling to write them. Although they seem like two separate problems, by building the student’s confidence, we are likely to see changes to both of these attitudes.
The first thing a tutor should do is to make sure that they understand exactly why the student is finding the analytical essays difficult so that they can formulate tutoring lessons around these points of weakness. For example, if the student is struggling with understanding certain themes, tutors could consider talking through the key concepts of each theme (through simple discussion, making it more casual and like a conversation) with the student, asking for their input and identifying the gaps in their understanding. If they’re struggling with structure, the tutor can provide them with clear and concise notes that are easy to follow so that they can reference them when writing their essays.
By addressing what they are struggling with first, this will allow students to build confidence, eliminating the mindset that writing analytical essays is boring. More generally, tutors can make classes enjoyable by changing up the activities during each lesson in order to help with their learning . A tutor should continuously encourage and support their student’s learning by understanding the student’s goals for English so that they can help them to achieve that goal. Tutors should be approachable so that students feel comfortable to contact them with any concerns or queries.
