More Information
Subject Overview

Legal Studies is a popular Humanities course in VCE that is undertaken by individuals with a passion for reading, writing and applying practical knowledge. The subject gives students an overview of the fundamental functioning’s of Australia’s legal and political systems and puts into perspective the roles of various organisations and institutions. Furthermore, the subject covers historical context relating to the foundations of the existing legal and political context.

Amongst the specifics of the course are:

  • Civil law
  • Criminal Law
  • Australian Constitutional Law
  • State and Federal Politics
  • The roles of Legal and Political Institutions

For students to succeed in this subject it is essential that they are willing to commit to the arduous amounts of content that the course entails. It is a dense course so students must stay on top of their work and even be willing to go ahead to anticipate future lessons. Furthermore, successful students will not purely learn from the textbook but instead examine the real-world applications and impacts of what they are learning.

Difficulty

Most topics within the legal studies course have a similar level of difficulty. However, there are some topics that require more detail in written responses than others. Some of these topics include constitutional law and the protection of rights, which involves referring to and describing specific legal cases.

Traps and Pitfalls

The pitfalls of this subject include lack of commitment to the content, lack of interest in the study, rote learning from a textbook and under-writing by producing insufficient depth of answer. If students avoid these pitfalls, they are destined for success in Legal Studies.

Mindset Required

Legal studies is a content heavy, knowledge-based subject where reading and writing are important skills. In order to do well, patience and dedication is needed. However, it is not those who are the most naturally talented who do well in legal studies, it is those who work the hardest.
