A more popular VCE subject, Business Management is regarded as one of the most rewarding and accessible subjects to undertake for those willing to consistently put in work. Its popularity is likely due to its appeal to a wide range of students, as it incorporates elements of strong writing, data analysis, commerce and current world issues. Students with no business background can thrive in this course, as it allows commitment and a strong work ethic to be rewarded.
The subject’s content mainly lies in learning definitions, advantages, disadvantages and comparisons. Business Management covers a range of business elements, with each area of study focusing on one certain business aspect (Human Resources, Operations, Change, etc.). Students will also cover participants within these areas, exploring the roles of groups like employees, managers and competitors. Each section must ultimately be applied to business examples and events, known as case studies, a skill greatly assessed on the 2 hours and 15 minute exam.
Despite content seeming more accessible and simple than in subjects such as Chemistry and Specialist Maths, Business Management’s end of year exam scores out of 75 remain relatively low. As seen in the examiner’s reports, Business Management’s difficulty lies in its large focus on having a correct answer structure within a pressurised environment. While having a deep understanding of the content is important, don’t forget about developing clear, structured and succinct answers through practice and feedback.
Understanding ‘Task Words’ is essential to success in Business Management. Whether it be comparing, proposing or evaluating, students ensure this task word remains central to the structure and focus of each answer.
