Whilst being a subject loaded with definitions and processes, Biology is one of the most enriching and fascinating subjects on the VCE syllabus due to students learning about the intricacies of organisms and nature. Often known as the 'easier' science, students mustn't be fooled by the lack of chemical equations and big numbers in biology, as the subject makes up for this in demand for revision of concepts and minute details in written language on exams. It is a subject that requires students to have an in-depth knowledge of cells - the basic building blocks for all life, and the processes that go on inside of them, as well as how they communicate and work together to create responses such as our immune system. Biology extends into the larger ecosystem mechanisms such as natural selection in evolution and the history of life, covering fossilisation and evolutionary change of organisms.
Although not a prerequisite, biology provides great foundational knowledge for students looking to study anything from medicine to environmental science and essentially any major in a bachelor of science degree. The subject of biology is made easier by much of the content linking to what is next learnt, helping students revise as they continue to learn, making the slight mark-up of study score even more tempting.
It is vital to understand the mistakes you make and extract general principles that can help you improve your answer to similar questions. Just simply attempting a lot of practice questions without trying to understand how and why you made certain mistakes will not be effective.
Use the marks allocated as a proxy to determine the amount of information required. Make sure to address every part of the question.
It is also important to not only tunnel focus on either content revision or practice questions as you revise for your Biology exam. It is extremely important to have a good balance of both, as exam questions require students to extract information from different aspects of their study, which cannot be achieved by simply doing practice questions.
It is very important to approach this subject with the mindset that you will need to memorise a lot of information, and do a lot of practice questions. It is only in the suggested solutions will you find the key phrases the examiners are looking for, as well as the direction in which these questions want you to go.
